Palm Springs is the perfect environment for succulents, but when they’re planted in a concrete pot without drainage, extra care is essential. Overwatering is the biggest risk, but with mindful watering and the right placement, your arrangement will stay lush and beautiful. Here’s how to help your succulents thrive.
Mindful Watering: Less Is More
- Water only when the soil is completely dry—typically every 10-14 days in spring. In summer, every 5-7 days. In cooler months, reduce watering even further—once every 3-4 weeks may be enough.
- Use a watering can with a narrow spout to target the soil, avoiding excess moisture on the leaves.
- DO NOT use a garden hose, sprinkler, or automatic watering system
- Pour only enough water to moisten the soil, for example, in the arrangement pictured here, this would be only about ¼ to ½ cup for a 10” pot, depending on humidity levels.
- It bears repeating: Never use a garden hose, sprinkler, or automatic watering system, as this will lead to root rot, and break down the cement.
Light: Let There Be Sunshine
- Place your arrangement in bright, indirect light or morning sun for at least 4-6 hours a day.
- If keeping indoors, a south- or west-facing window works best. If the succulents stretch or fade in color, they need more light.
Soil & Drainage: Create
- A fast-draining succulent mix is essential to prevent root rot. If replanting, mix in perlite or pumice to improve drainage. Add activated charcoal at the bottom of the pot helps absorb excess moisture.
Temperature & Humidity: Ideal Conditions
- Keep your succulents arrangement in temperatures between 60-85°F.
- In warm months, move arrangements indoors.
- Palm Springs’ dry climate is perfect, but once temperatures go above 85, time to move the arrangement inside. Indoors, good airflow prevents excess humidity buildup.
Maintenance: Keeping It Picture-Perfect
- Remove dried or shriveled leaves to prevent pests and encourage healthy growth.
- Rotate your pot every few weeks for even sunlight exposure.
- If you notice mold or soggy soil, let the pot dry out completely before watering again.
