Every day, our words and actions carry power far greater than we imagine.
- Water exposed to positive stimuli, like classical music or kind words, formed intricate, symmetrical crystals resembling snowflakes.
- Conversely, water exposed to negative stimuli, such as heavy metal music or hateful phrases, produced jagged, chaotic, and asymmetrical shapes .
Living Things Respond to Positivity: The Plant Study
Similarly, studies have shown that plants thrive when exposed to positive words, soothing music, or affirmations. Conversely, neglect or harsh treatment can stunt their growth. This phenomenon highlights the undeniable connection between energy and life—whether directed at plants, animals, or humans.
Just as plants can flourish or wither depending on the energy they receive, humans are no different. Positive reinforcement fosters growth and creativity, while negativity can hinder and harm.
A Personal Story of Transformation
Sometimes, life delivers feedback in the most unexpected ways. One day, while I was working outside in the front yard of my store, I received harsh criticism from a neighboring business owner. At the time, the shop’s exterior was, admittedly, a bit of a mess. Plants were scattered everywhere, broken containers sat abandoned, and nothing was organized. Reflecting back, my mind mirrored that chaos—I was overwhelmed with stress from opening a new business, and it showed.
“As I worked outside, the neighbor drove by and yelled out her window, ‘Your store looks like shit!’ and then flipped me off. I was devastated. I teared up, hurt by her words and wondering how someone could be so cruel. But then, as I looked around, I realized something: she was right.”
Her delivery wasn’t kind, but her message was valid. The state of my storefront wasn’t a reflection of the care and passion I had for my business. That moment became a turning point. The very next day, I took everything out, reorganized the space, and planted with intention. No more broken containers, no more scattered succulents. I cleaned the space until it felt like a true reflection of the vision I had for my store.
Today, the shop’s exterior draws countless compliments from customers. People stop to admire the plants and comment on how inviting and beautiful the space is. Ironically, that neighbor’s harsh comment—though deeply painful—gave me the push I needed to transform my business. I’m grateful for that unfiltered advice, even if it wasn’t delivered with kindness.
The Domino Effect of Our Actions
This story highlights how even negativity can ripple into something positive when met with the right mindset. Imagine, though, how much more impactful positive actions and words can be. A kind word, a thoughtful gesture, or a moment of patience can inspire change far beyond what we see. Conversely, negativity—like cutting someone off in traffic or delivering criticism without thought—can create ripples of frustration and anger.
The truth is, the energy we put into the world matters. Whether it’s through words, actions, or presence, we’re constantly shaping our environment and the people within it.
This Week’s Challenge: Awareness
This week, I challenge you to pick one small action that you can commit to for the next seven days to create positive ripple effects in the world.
- Practice patience on the road. When someone signals to change lanes, slow down and wave them over. Offer kindness instead of frustration.
- Hold the door for others. Even if it takes a few extra seconds, take the time to hold the door open for someone, no matter who they are or how far away they might seem.
- Speak with intention. Turn a complaint into a compliment. Find opportunities to uplift a stranger, coworker, or loved one with kind words.
- Listen to your gut. If you feel the urge to help someone—whether it’s stopping to assist someone struggling or offering a simple smile—act on it.
